Horse riders benefit from motorcycle rider safety!
Kan Teq is once more ahead of the game! The recently announced British Eventing 16 Point Safety Plan states that the sport of Eventing should look to other high risk sports for best practice. Kan Teq’s unique body protectors use technology developed for the one of the world’s most dangerous sports, motorcycling. Kan Teq is the only equestrian body protector to utilise the advanced technology that has revolutionised levels of protection in motorcycling body armour. Geoff Travell is the Managing Director of Planet-Knox, the UK's most established manufacturer of impact protectors for motorcyclists.
He also sits on the European Committee for motorcycle protector standards. Said Geoff Travell, “I was delighted when I was approached by Wendy McCaughan from Kan Teq in Northern Ireland about safety protection in equestrian sports. Having designed protection for riders of motorcycles, it was exciting to look at the protection needed by riders of horses! Knox pioneered a material which incorporates open and closed cells that create passageways that let the trapped air move freely, hence the comfort of the body protector to the rider. However, on impact the air gets compressed and absorbs energy so the impact is distributed over the entire surface of contact with the body.” Eleanor Barns Graham, who had a crashing fall at Dunany in June, commented: “The horse stood on my arm causing serious muscle damage, smashed out two teeth, and stood on my ribcage (with two studs in!).The Kan took the impact and was ripped. Judging by the damage done to the Kan, it was a severe blow and I believe if I was wearing anything else I would not have gotten off so lightly as Knox's foam is so especially strong. The Kan is not only revolutionary in its comfort and breathability, it is a lifesaver!”
The Kan Teq is fully approved for the job of body protection and carries the EN13158:2000 and BETA level 3 certification. Many riders and protection specialists already believe it is the future for body protection and it is currently worn by riders like Jeanette Brakewell, Nicola Wilson and Lottie Prentice. Said Jeanette Brakewell, “This body protector allows me to breathe and maintain my own oxygen levels and performance; I find the Kan very comfortable and my movement is not restricted at all” Jeanette Brakewell.
Commented Managing Director of Kan Teq, Co Down based Wendy McCaughan, “Kan Teq has already looked at other high risk sports and at more innovative materials than currently used in the equestrian sector. I have used my experience of military bullet proof design to identify the issues that surround bulky protective clothing to make an improved garment as well as identifying the leading manufacturer of impact protection products in probably the most demanding of all impacts – motor cycling.” .
